Jim's comments below: Bill /font id="navy"> * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Guys,We have had the good fortune of being able to try a wide variety of intakes and spacers. And over a fairly wide range of RPM and performance. All intakes are RPM sensitive – they are designed to perform best in a certain RPM range. All will run at any RPM, but may not make very good power at certain RPM. The factory Q- Jet units were designed to run from idle to about 5. The present iron and aluminum Pontiac intakes are functionally a direct copy of the 1. Super Duty intake. The mounting is different, but the runner and plenum designs are essentially identical. So they are excellent intakes – probably the best of any production passenger car. At the time of the original 1. While runner length, cross section, and plenum design basically establishes the RPM range, engine displacement will also have an effect. The larger engines must move more air, so may not run as effeciently at higher RPM as do the smaller engines with identical intakes. And that is where “porting” for added airflow can become important with higher RPM, smaller engines, as well as moderate RPM larger engines. At the time of our initial tests of intakes, I was just looking for the quickest intake with decent driving for my car at that time. I didn’t begin the project to test intakes. But after about the fourth one, I realized that the tests would be of general interste so contacted High Performance Pontiac magazine, who printed the results back in about 1. While the factory aluminum HO intake was slightly slower then the iron, it was a minor amount and most cars would not be able to measure the difference. I contacted Mac Mc. Keller, who worked on the high performance programs, about the results and he was a bit surprised. But he also reported they never tested nor made a direct comparision between the iron and Al units. As both use the same runner shape and design, they could be expected to run the same. ![]() The Mustang II Organization, Since 1997. And with the Al unit lighter, perhaps a bit quicker. However, during production the plenum floor had to be raised slightly to clear the iron exhaust crossover, and that was enough change to slightly degrade airflow on _ of the intake. But it is still an excellent intake and as suitable for use as the iron version. The Edelbrock Performer has unusually small runnner cross sections, and a relatively small plenum. While this does indeed sharpen up low RPM response, it also restricts the amount of air that can be passed at higher RPM. So it doesn’t work as well as the stocker at higher RPM’s, especially on the larger displacement engines. And I have tried a first class porting job on one, and it still didn’t perform as expected, as does the stock with similar porting. ![]() The RPM is an excellent combination, especially for the larger engines, and/or higher RPM engines. However, to obtain that performance, the engineers had to use a certain length intact tract and plenum design. RPM. And unfortunately, that made it too tall for certain cars. While many use it in place of a stock intake, unless the engine is regularly run past 5. RPM. The feel is misleading because it doesn’t kick as hard in the early RPM but does begin to feel stronger at mid and upper range. And that feel, or kick, tends to mislead us into thinking the bigger intake has really added performance. But traction and a set of clocks at the drag strip reveal the truth! And this characteristic is particularly true with any of the single plane units – most lose substantial low and early mid range power, but feel stronger at higher RPM. However, any higher RPM intake, single or dual plane, can provide excellent performance if the chassis and engines are set up to run at higher RPM. This normally requires greater head flow, looser converter, and deeper gears, as well as the courage to launch and shift at considerably higher RPM. Couuld the RPM be shortened/redesigned and still run well? Certainly! A good intake engineer could do it, but time is costly and a company like Edelbrock won’t tamper with a relatively successfully product even though it does not fit all of our Pontiacs. The earlier versions of the Edelbrock intakes will run and feel OK. But under measured conditions, they will not perform with the later versions, just as our 3. Pontiacs won’t provide the combination of performance, mileage, and comfort that new cars do. The stock intakes can be improved for 1/4 mile work. I have done some extensive work on both an iron stocker and an RPM, with similar mods to both. In a test last year, we made two runs with the stocker at 1. Immediately switched to the RPM and ran 1. And since the RPM was about 1. So I saw about . 0. RPM while shifting both at the identical 5. RPM. One significant method of adding performance to almost any combination of engine and intake is the use of a carb spacer. Here is a brief rundown on spacers and effects: 1. They increase the volume of the intake manifold plenum. This provides better fuel/air delivery at higher RPM. They change the intake tract length, and this can improve intake tuning by peaking the manifold at a more favorable RPM. They can provide some crossover air between the left side and right side of the carb., thus making the carb appear larger. On a stock manifold, lifting the Q_Jet up via a spacer removes the serious blockage of # 8 Port caused by the Q- Jet secondary throttle plate. My flow bench indicates a significant increase in flow through #8 port with a one inch spacer. The type of spacer, divided, open, or partially divided, can cause different effects: 1. A divided spacer (left and right sides separated) will cause 1,2, and 4. An open spacer will cause 1, 2, 3, and 4. However, it will also degrade idle and low RPM operation, because the air velocity will be reduced. A partially open spacer (divider between primaries but open between secondaries) can provide all benefits with no significant penalties. Where can you get them? Go to your local store that sells white pine boards. Select one with minimum knots, and obtain a coping saw. Stop by your auto parts store and buy a roll of gray (softer) gasket paper. Using a Q- Jet gasket, trace and cut/drill the bolt hole openings, the outside outline, and the throttle plate openings in the shape you want. Cut gaskets to match, and glue them on both sides with contact cement. Note that wood is an excellent heat insulator, and wooden spacers will tend to isolate your carb from manifold heat. Make several different types, obtain new correct length mounting bolts, and head for the strip. Caution, the carb mounting holes on a stock manifold extend into the ports. Excessively long bolts will protrude into the ports and possibly affect airflow. How about the RPM manifold that is so tall that there is no room for spacers? You can make the carb look larger by cutting down into the plenum divider. My tests show that a full front to back cut will seriously degrade low RPM response, but if the cut is only across the secondary throttle openings, throttle response is retained and air flow and performance are improved. I cut the plenum divider down . If you don’t like the results of the divider cut, rebuild the divider using fuel resistant epoxy putty reinforced by several pieces of a small Allen wrench drilled into the divider. Or cut small angled slots on both ends and make a matching filler plate to drop into the slots. We have seen as much as a . Q- Jet with a fully divided 1 inch spacer. By all means try it, but do your own testing. Don’t rely on my tests or your buddy’s results, because your combination, operating rpm, and vehicle is different from any other. Do spacers work? In most cases yes. In addition to the dragstrip test between my stock and RPM, I recently was able to compare the spacer with a pure stock iron intake on a premium DST dyno. I have used and touted carb spacers for years, and suggested folks at least try one or more types. I made one about two inches tall with a significant portion of the secondary divider removed - to fit my iron Q jet intake. The intake has been worked with the front/rear dividers removed, and the runners cleaned and sized to the gaskets. This week, I had a chance to see the difference on the DST dyno from 3.

The Cassini Team Reflects on How it Feels to Say Goodbye to Their Spacecraft. Yesterday morning, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft slammed into the day side of Saturn, the brief flash of its vaporization marking the end of a 1. But it took people to turn this hunk of aluminum and silicon into an extension of our curiosity. For the past three days, I’ve chatted with engineers and scientists at the wooden tables dotting Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s pedestrian mall, and in the sage- scented gardens surrounding Caltech. These are the people behind Cassini’s mission, who shepherded the spacecraft from concept to completion. They are the collective heart, brains and soul that transform its measurements into data. From twenty- seven- year mission veterans to new hires in the past few months, they all shared complex reactions of pride, exhaustion, and sadness when faced with Cassini’s Grand Finale.“I’m wondering if my muse is disappearing,” Jonathan Lunine tells me as a documentary crew charges past us in the courtyard. He’s the interdisciplinary scientist coordinating the exploration of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Cassini will always be the touchstone for my career.” Shaking off his morose reflectiveness, he finds a silver lining to share. Usage Statistics for communitygaze.com Summary Period: June 2017 - Search String Generated 01-Jul-2017 02:11 PDT. I’m looking forward to spending more time engaged with the data than planning.”Days before Cassini’s final plunge, I asked David Doody, who supervises real time operations, how he was feeling. Dread,” he told me with with a laugh.“This fine mission is ending, sailing off into the unknown.”Doody supervises realtime operations “where the rubber meets the road”—the human traffic directors for Cassini’s incoming data that shunt ones and zeros to their appropriate stations. He started working on Cassini in 1. But he won’t be resting long now the mission is over: “I’ve got documentation to do.”Trina Rey is another long- time Cassini veteran who joined the team overnight in 1. I’ve been calling into operations status meetings for twenty years,” she tells me. The last meeting is on Tuesday.” The handkerchief she used to dab her eyes is Cassini- purple, perfectly coordinated with her official mission shirt.“Every month or so, Cassini sends me this little burst of data. Here Trina, here’s something you might not know..’,” she teases before sobering. It’s going to take a while to get used to not having that.”When I ask Cassini flight controller Joan Stupik how she is feeling, she turns it around on me. I’m used to seeing how [Cassini] is feeling every day.” New to the mission, she was delighted to share excitement when scientists couldn’t wait to share images of Saturn’s wonky shepherd moons. For her, Friday morning was a bittersweet vigil, participating in the color commentary of Cassini’s final moments.“I think I’m still in denial,” Carl Murray confides during a lunch break as across the solar system Cassini makes its final photographic tour of the Saturn system on Thursday. We still have images coming down. We have a functional spacecraft. What could possibly go wrong?”Murray applied to join Cassini at the start of the mission using astrometry to explore images by exposing them until objects are backdropped by starry skies. That’s how he found Peggy, a glitch in Saturn’s outer ring that’s yet to be fully explained. Cassini has answered questions,” he tells me. But like any good mission should, it has produced so many more questions that need to be answered.” A hint of a smile emerges as he contemplates the mysteries yet to be solved. Maybe Monday is Day One of [answering them].”“Cassini has answered questions. But like any good mission should, it has produced so many more questions that need to be answered.”After Cassini vaporizes in Saturn’s storms, its final radio signal lost forever, the uncertain mood shifts and solidifies. A moment of sadness, intensity of emotion overwhelming even those who thought themselves immune, then applause and finally celebration takes hold.“How are you?” I ask Andrew Ingersoll, an atmospheric scientist with the team. ![]()
I’m very lucky to have been a part of this mission, and to have been alive in the Space Age,” he immediately responds. I soon learn of his career from Pioneer through Voyager to twenty- seven years working with Cassini, and how very excited he is to see how this deep- space craft fared at collecting an atmospheric sample for him to analyze. Hydrogen and helium float up to the surface of Saturn,” he explains. Anything that isn’t hydrogen or helium has to be ring rain coming down from above!”I cross the auditorium to eavesdrop on John Casani, Cassini’s pre- launch project manager, and Charles Elachi, former director of overseeing operations at JPL and Cassini’s radar lead. How are you feeling?” I ask in my now- habitual refrain. I feel great!” Casani declares. The spacecraft went out the way I hope to go out in my life: quickly!”“And doing science to the end,” Elachi teases.“For me it was just a piece of aluminum and silicon,” Casani says. It’s just parts until engineers do something with it.” For all his pragmatism, he lights up when describing his favorite discoveries. Enceladus,” he declares without hesitation. In its first year around Saturn, Cassini discovered that this icy moon harbored not only a liquid ocean water below its icy crust, but that it had geysers spewing that water into space.“There’s a little, tiny rock in space venting water. It’s incredible.” Elachi holds himself back from interjecting, trying to wait his turn to be interviewed.“In my book, this is one of the greatest science missions this country has ever undertaken,” Elachi tells me. His top discovery is the lakes and seas of Titan. Titan is like Earth, but the weather is all with liquid natural gas.”I wander the auditorium, talking to any purple- shirted mission team member I can find. Chuck Kirby spent nineteen years of his thirty- year career on Cassini. It’s bittersweet,” he tells me. But he’s excited about training for his new mission, NASA’s SMAP satellite monitoring soil moisture. I’d like to spend the rest of my career fighting climate change.”I spot one scientist in an orange shirt, yet bearing the same Cassini logo. Kareem Badaruddin is a tester for Cassini’s brain, dedicated to finding problems to fix before they emerged in the field. How are you?” I ask. Tired,” he says, but the longer we talk the more details emerge. He remembers coming to this same auditorium nearly twenty years ago to watch Cassini launch. His wife was very pregnant with their first child, and unimpressed when a hardware failure forced a launch scrub. They returned to bear witness as Cassini broke free of Earth’s bonds on October 1. My son and Cassini came to adulthood together,” he tells me. We got to Saturn when he was in first grade, discovered geysers on Enceladus when he was in second grade.”“In my book, this is one of the greatest science missions this country has ever undertaken”Our early- morning gathering is an echo of an earlier time for Badaruddin. Cassini launched without an orbital insertion algorithm, the ability to use its reaction wheels, or the capacity to deploy the Huygen’s probe. For the six years and eight months the spacecraft flew past Earth, Venus, and Jupiter while cruising to Saturn, Badaruddin walked to JPL at 3: 3. Saturn. “It’s dark and cold,” he tells me of early morning walks both past and present. I saw three skunks this morning. I only saw one during all my walks before.”Family members are here, too, reminders that the unrelenting demands of orbital dynamics stretch beyond awkward 3am press events to witness the spacecraft’s demise. Rosina Maize is proud of her husband Earl’s accomplishments as Cassini’s program manager. But she’s also written the mission timeline on her household calendar for years, turning down social plans for flybys and critical trajectory corrections.“I can be alone on Christmas or invite all these European scientists to our home,” she says, recalling the timing of Cassini releasing its European Space Agency- led Huygens probe on December 2. In the aftermath of the Grand Finale, the Maizes will be adding a personal note to their celebration. Yesterday was our anniversary,” she confides. ![]()
